Series Overview

Red Warrior…. Wow… Okay… So… That’s not a very appropriate title now is it? Well despite the insensitive title and inappropriately named character, this series was actually that bad compared to other depictions of Native Americans during the Atlas era of comics. This series followed the adventures of Red Warrior, a brave Comanche warrior. He was often guided by Manitou the Native American god.

Is This Series Part of Continuity?

Outwardly it would appear not. When you take a look at Thor & Hercules: Encyclopaedia Mythologica handbook it has an entry on the Manidoog (aka the Native American gods) it lists their first appearance as Thor #300. Manitou was referenced as far back as Ghost Rider #1 (the western hero from the 60s, not the modern age character). Even the Unofficial Appendix of to the Handbook of the Marvel Universe does not reference the Red Warrior stories in their Manitou profile. They usually include obscure things like that in their work. So what gives?

This is a similar case as characters like Tex Morgan, Tex Taylor, Blaze Carson, and the original Gunhawk in that these are Marvel owned characters but they have long been forgotten. I think in the case of Red Warrior a lot of that has to do with the inappropriate name. If Marvel were to bring this character back they’d probably change his name to something that isn’t considered racist.

If anyone at Marvel is reading this, it’s time for one of my patented really awesome story ideas you should totally do: It’s a title called Forgotten Marvels of the West and features these forgotten western heroes. The first issue would have a scene where Tex Taylor gets the shit beat out of him for calling him the Red Warrior. The rest of the story would have Skrulls or Mephisto or something, but mostly it’s an excuse to have one of the marginalized Native American characters beat one of the white cowboys within an inch of his life for being a bigot.

Anyway, there is no reason why this can’t be part of continuity, but there is nothing officially saying if it is or if it isn’t. If Marvel can arbitrarily decide that Thor’s first appearance is no longer Venus #whatever, then they can move back Maniou’s first appearance. Also I wrote these summaries back when I was with Fandom, no sense in letting them go to waste or have my work muddied by some dickbag adding “Horses” as an appearance. Also this is my index, I can choose what goes here and what doesn’t.
