About

The Unofficial Index to the Marvel Universe is a fan-made project that is attempting to index and provide companion notes for every in-continuity Marvel Comic book that has been published.

Our intent is to be a companion to other semi-official Marvel websites such as the Appendix to the Handbook of the Marvel Universe and the Chronology Project. A DIY resource that is by-a-fan-for-fans but unimpeded by the editorial policies and fevered egos found on content aggregator websites and wikis.

This is a project that is a labor of love by a fan for fans. It is provided for free and will never be hidden behind a paywall. However, I am doing this all on his own and in his free time while living on a fixed income due to disability. As such, if you’d like to donate to my Patreon page it would be greatly appreciated.

Updates Have Moved.

Interpretations of Continuity

This is a work in progress

This project has started on July 5, 2019 and is a work in progress. The site went live on March 31, 2020 when we launched with a large number of golden age comics, and a massive catalog of Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, and Hulk comics. We will continue to expand and add more to this site as time provides.

focus

This site is going to be entirely focused on three specific aspects: Issue summaries and providing continuity notes for each story. Items that are frequently absent from many websites. You won’t find creator credits, behind the scene information, chronologies or detailed publication history. That is because you can find these details literally anywhere else. I mean no offense to the many talented people who have worked to bring these stories to life, but as I’ve said, I’m adding information you can’t find anywhere else creator credits of these many comics can be found on numerous websites, wikis, as well as Marvel’s own website.

Hey, some of these summaries look familiar!

Some of the summaries and continuity notes you see here may look familiar to some as the material is taken from the work I have done for a crowdsourced website. That’s because those summaries were written by me while during my time I was writing on that wiki. I left for a number of reasons: I had a number of editorial differences. I frequently had editorial differences with those who favored quantity over quality. There was an absolute lack of leadership. Users regularly plagiarized material. Laziness was favored instead of quality research. The focus was on minor or one-off characters instead of addressing the massive gaps of important information. Lastly, there were accusations of conduct by one of the admins that were taken as seriously as I thought it should have. Between the lack of professionalism, the constant plagiarism, incorrect information, and the fact that it was — in my opinion — no longer a safe space for users I left.

Taking a page from the late Steve Gerber, I am reposting (and updating) my work on the database to “take back” my own work. If anyone over there has a problem with that kindly review your Creative Commons policy and then go fuck yourselves.

From this point forward, I will be referring to this website as the Garbage Database. While they are SEO-driven to be the top of any Google search their output is what it is: Utter garbage.

Can I contribute to the unofficial index?

No.

I run another website. Can I use your work to help with research on my own site?

Please ask by sending me an e-mail. Unless you contribute to the Garbage Database, I will not see any more of my work appear on there.

What’s the deal with all the Tobey Maguire gifs?

I’m putting a GIF of Tobey Maguire on every summary that references the murder of Uncle Ben. I’ve written summaries for five decades worth of Spider-Man comics and the number of times that Uncle Ben’s death is brought up borders on the absurd. I get that it’s at the core of Spider-Man and integral to his origins but it gets brought up a lot that I think it’s a writers crutch. So I really wanted to punctuate how often it is mentioned. I thought a sobbing Tobey Maguire was a hilarious way to do it. What do you want? I’m kind of a dick.

PLAGIARISTS beware

This site is monitored by Copyscape. I will receive notices whenever my work appears somewhere else and proper credit was not given. If that’s the case I will be aggressively going after your website provider with a DMCR takedown request. I’ve worked hard to write all of this on my own and the last thing I want is someone stealing my words and using them somewhere else without my permission.

This warning is particularly directed to the lazy fucks who copy and paste material from other websites over at the Garbage Database, which on top of being inaccurate garbage is rife with plagerism.

Thanks

Thanks go out to the Unofficial Appendix to the Handbook to the Marvel Universe, The Marvel Chronology Project, uncannyxmen.net, spiderfan.org, manwithoutfear.net, CMRO, comics.org, as well as the various authors of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe and the Official Index to the Marvel Universe. I regularly cross-reference my work using these sources and I greatly appreciate all the hard work you have all done as it makes my job slightly easier.

Dedications

This Index was only possible thanks to the encouragement of Sideshow Darling and Mister Matches, who reminded me that if you want something done right you need to do it yourself.
